Jump into French history for a great day tour in Provence!
At 9am you will meet your friendly A la Francaise guide who is ready to share his wealth of knowledge on the historical sites in Provence.
Climbing aboard your comfortable, upmarket minivan you will depart Avignon and set off on your way to Nîmes. This is a great city of the arts, proud of its prestigious Roman past. Visit the Arena (entrance included) and the "Maison Carrée" (Square House), one of the best preserved Roman temples, and the Gate of Augustus. Learn about the city's Roman past as you go.
Next on your historical tour of Provence is a visit to the medieval town of Uzès. The first Duchy of France, this town is set in the garrigues countryside (mediterranean vegetation). Visit the Place aux Herbes (picturesque square), the Episcopal Palace, the Ducal Palace, the Fenestrelle Tower (a unique bell-tower) and the Cathedral. Outside of Uzès is the catchment area of the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard that brought spring water to Nîmes.
Pont du Gard dates from the first century and is classified by UNESCO, it's the most amazing and well preserved part of the Roman acqueduct which supplied water to Nîmes. This is a fascinating and very important part of any historical tour in Provence.
Your last stop of the day is with a visit to the ancient theatre in the town of Orange (entrance included).
After visiting Orange it's time for the drive back to Avignon where you tour guide will drop you off at 5pm.
Please note: some events take place during the year inside the Arena of Nimes. In this case the visit of the Arena will be replaced by a photo stop around the monument.
