Bonnieux

Through the centuries and their stories, Bonnieux has spread across the entire slope of its hill; in times of war people lived on the heights, and in times of peace along the edges of the valley. This is how generations have shaped this place, turning it today into one of the great picturesque symbols of the Luberon. To walk through this village is to walk through the ages, and the journey that Bonnieux offers can begin either from the top or from the bottom. At the foot of the village stands a 19th-century church, yet it is in its surroundings that, 21 centuries earlier, Roman civilization built its first villas. Slowly, one can climb up through the village as one would travel back in time: small alleyways, almost secret in appearance, invite visitors to ascend through a setting that still resonates with an ancient soul.At the summit of the village lies the origin of its history; here stands the old 12th-century church, and it was on these heights that the Gauls once lived before being displaced by Roman colonization. It is also here that one understands the origin of the village’s name, just as one is struck by the view offered from this highest point, for in ancient times the village was called Bonilis (“good eye”).Before us lies one of the most beautiful panoramas in the region: a living painting overlooking the entire Luberon Valley, a spectacle that leaves a lasting impression on the visitor’s memory.
