Saint-Émilion is located around 35km (or a 45 minute drive) north-west of Bordeaux in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, in the department of the Gironde, South-western France.
Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or not, Saint Emilion is definitely worth a visit. A classified UNESCO World Heritage site, the village itself is an exceptionally charming town steeped in history and filled with cafes, restaurants and boutiques. And for those interested in wine, a trip to Saint Emilion should definitely include a visit and tasting at one of its chateaux.
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé refers to the classification system established in 1955. To be recognised as a Grand Cru vineyard in St. Emilion, the vineyard must be situated in the designated area, comply with the established regulations, and successfully apply for the Grand Cru status. It’s possible to visit a number of these chateaux for guided tours and to taste their exceptional wines.
Whilst you can drive yourself, the easiest way to get to Saint-Émilion and to visit its best chateaux is on a guided tour which picks you up and returns you to Bordeaux where there is a wealth of accommodation options. This way, you can relax and enjoy wine tastings without needing to drive yourself or to manage bookings with multiple châteaux.
Yes, it is possible to combine a tour to St.Emilion and Medoc in one day. Our guided tours take you to one wine region in the morning, with a break for lunch, followed by a tour of the second region in the afternoon.
Both St.Emilion and Medoc are worth a visit. Whilst Medoc is home to 4 of the world’s most renowned wine making communes, Saint Emilion village offers the attraction of exploring a UNESCO World Heritage site. For those of you are who short on time, or simply can’t decide, you can choose a full day tour that takes you to both!
In Saint-Emilion, the primary grape varieties cultivated are Merlot and Cabernet Franc which form the foundation of the renowned Saint-Emilion blend. However, it is not uncommon to find wines in which Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec are also utilised.
